The Hull Family

Sidney Hull was born March 1822 in Somerset County, Maryland. There is not any information concerning his childhood, except that he was a slave.  He was joined in holy matrimony to Mary Horsey circa 1843.  Mary Horsey Hull was born December 1820 in Somerset County, Maryland. She was the mother of twelve children, six of them still living in 1900. The following children of this marriage that reached adulthood were Edward Franklin Hull, Matilda Jane Hull, Minta (Minnie) Hull, Ellen Nora (Eleanor) Hull, Joseph Albert Hull, Mary Lucinda Hull, John Royal Hull and Lemuel Handy Hull.

His brother James Ephraim Hull was born August 1828 in Somerset County Maryland. Ephraim lived and reared his family in the Barren Creek District (Mardela Springs) of Somerset County, Maryland. He died July 30, 1904 in Mardela Springs, Maryland. A death certificate, in the Maryland Archives located in Annapolis, Maryland of James Ephraim Hull, stated that his parents were Somerset Hull and Mary Austin. Ephraim’s first marriage was to Sinia Hull. She was born August 22, 1830 in Somerset County, Maryland. The children of this marriage were James Ephraim Hull Jr., Charles W Hull, Martha A Hull, Annie W Hull, Claracy Hull, Robert Hull and Mary Hull. Sinia Hull passed away May 16, 1894 and was buried in John Wesley Church Cemetery in Mardela Springs, Maryland.

Blacks were not allowed to fight in the Union Army during the Civil War until the Army had incurred numerous losses on the battlefield. January 1, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln made and signed a draft of the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the slaves in the rebelling states.  Even though this document did not apply to Maryland slaves (thanks to the Union troop stations throughout the state, Maryland never left the Union) it did signal the beginning of the end for the peculiar institution in Maryland.

After the Emancipation Proclamation became law, Congress authorized the formation of the United States Colored Troops, which eventually numbered 166 black regiments officered by whites with a total of 185,000 black troops. According to “Before the Mayflower” written by Lerone Bennett, 40,000 black soldiers came from Border States like Maryland.  However, it should be noted that before slaves could be enlisted in Maryland, their masters had to be paid. Negroes trained and fought on a segregated basis and were not treated as equal with whites. For example, the Negro soldiers were paid $7 a month whereas whites were paid $13.

Because of this unequal treatment, many of the colored soldiers became restive, sullen and even insubordinate.  But the majority were less interested in being treated differently than in having the opportunity to fight and improve their courage and devotion. “The Negro,” said Sergeant Major Fleetwood of the Virginia Campaign, “stood in full glare of the greatest searchlights, part and parcel of the grandest armies ever mustered upon this continent, competing side by side with the bravest and the best of Lee’s Army and lost nothing in comparison.” Historian, Edward L.N. Glass, realizing the Negroes value on the Civil War battlefield, He said, “As soldiers, the colored men compare favorably with white men. They manifested a remarkable aptitude and desire for acquiring knowledge whenever opportunities have been afforded them as to boldly strength and natural physiques, they are not inferior and in the same respects, they are superior in habits, more readily discipline and take greater pride in performance of military duty. As a rule, they are better fitted for soldiers than white men.” This quote was found in “Negro Medal of Honor Men,” written by Irvin H. Lee, Dodd, Meade and Co., New York, 1967.

Colonel William Birney of the Second United States Colored Troops was the Superintendent of recruiting colored troops in the state of Maryland and had general charge of the enlistments and organization of the regiments. By October 8, 1863, the first six companies: A B C D E and F were uniformed. Sidney Hull enlisted in the Ninth Regiment of United States Colored Troops on November 22, 1863.  His Military records description of him was five feet four inches tall, had black hair and black skin. His rank was a private and he served three years and four days.

The Ninth Regiment Infantry US Colored Troops was organized at Benedict, Maryland between November 11, 1863 and November 30, 1863.  The regiment remained at Camp Stanton during the winter of 1863-1864 for drilling and preparing for active field duty.  On the third day of March 1864, the Ninth Regiment embarked the Steamships for Port Royal, South Carolina from there they went to Port Royal Islands. They served in Fussells Mills, Point of Rock, Deep Bottom, Chaplin Farm, Fort Monroe, Fort Gilmore & Petersburg, Virginia, Hilton Head South Carolina and Brownville, Texas. While in the Military; Sidney Hull developed chronic rheumatism due to the exposal of the weather and refused to go to the hospital for fear of losing his feet or legs. He was treated in his Quarters. Sidney Hull received an honorable discharge November 26, 1866 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was given a bounty of one hundred ($100) dollars and a pension of twelve ($12) dollars a month.

He received manumission papers (Freedom) from Joseph Bratten of Barren Creek November 23, 1863 which was documented August 29, 1865 in Somerset County Land Records and enrolled in Liber L.W. No. 8 page 35.  The slave inhabitants in Barren Creek District No. 2, Somerset County July 28, 1850 Slave owner was Joseph Bratten; Joshua H Smith, Assistant Marshall.
