The Jones Family
In 1804, the following names of five Negro slaves were in written in the estate of George Jones, an orphan living Somerset County, Maryland: Caleb Jones, Abraham Jones, Phillip Jones, Sarah Jones and Matilda Jones. Robert Jones was the guardian of George Jones. George Jones had inherited the slaves from a relative. It is not known whether or not these slaves were blood relatives because it was not uncommon for the slaves to have the same surname as their master. Some of these Jones families can be found living in the Tyaskin District of Somerset County.
Phillip Jones appears only once in the 1870 census records living in Wetipquin with his family. He was 70 years of age. Living in his household were his wife Mary Jones age 65, their daughters Mary age 20 and Matilda Jones age 26, three grandchildren Hester Jones age 12, Henrietta Jones age 9, and Charles Jones age 5. Other members of this family were adults living in their own homes.
By 1880, Phillip Jones was probably deceased. His widow Mary A Jones was living in the home alone. The 1880 census listed the following people, head of the household, of the Jones families living in Wetipquin. They were: Samuel Jones, Margaret Ann Jones Robinson, Matilda Jones, and William Jones. Angeline Jones lived with the Rencher Family in Wetipquin as a servant.
George Washington Jones. He was born circa 1833 in Somerset County Maryland. September 9, 1873 he married Susan Caroline Wright of Wetipquin. She was born circa 1836 in Wetipquin. Her parents were Boyce Wright and Leah Miles Wright of Wetipquin. The children of this marriage were James H Jones, Denwood Jones, RB Hayes Jones and his stepson, Edward Clark.
Samuel James Jones. Was born September 15, 1835 in Wetipquin. His wife was Sarah Wainwright Jones. She was born June 1838 in Somerset County Maryland. July 21, 1868, a deed was written in Wicomico County Land records for Noah Moore and his wife Margaret Moore to the Friendship Methodist Episcopal Church in Wetipquin Neck. Samuel Jones was listed among others as the first trustees of the Church. Samuel Jones was also very active in the life of the community. The children of this marriage were Francis Jones, Elizabeth Jones, Alice Jones, Margaret Jones, John H Jones, Rebecca Jones and Georgia Jones. Samuel James Jones passed away January 28, 1918 and was buried in the Odd Fellows cemetery in Wetipquin.
Francis Jones was born circa 1863. Elizabeth Jones was born circa 1869 in Wetipquin. Her husband’s surname was Jacob. They made their home in Pennsylvania. 1900 census shows that Gertrude Jones lived in her grandparent’s household. daughter was Gertrude Jones. She was born August 1891.
The 1900 census, Alice Jones was born April 1871 in Wetipquin. She married George Albert Tull June 27, 1888 in Wetipquin. The children of this marriage were Mary Emma Tull, John Samuel Tull, Sallie J Tull, Ruby F Tull, Sarah Margaret Tull, Fredrick Tull, Jacob Robert Tull and George Albert Tull Jr. Mary Emma Tull was born May 1889 in Wetipquin. Her husband was James Godfrey. He was born circa 1878 in Wetipquin. His parents were Joseph Godfrey and Minta B Hull Godfrey. Some of the children of this marriage were Minta Godfrey, James Godfrey and Elmer Godfrey. John Samuel Tull born March 1891; Sallie J Tull born May 1893; Ruby F Tull Born May 1895, Sarah Margaret Tull born September 1897.
Fredrick (Fred) Tull was born circa 1901. He lived in Pennsylvania with his family. Fred Tull was an original member of the Friendship Club of Philadelphia that supported the special programs of his home Church in Wetipquin. Jacob Robert Tull was born circa 1902 in Wetipquin. He married Annie Marie Dashiell of Mardela Spring, Maryland September 22, 1923. The children of this marriage were Louise Elizabeth Tull born circa 1925, Ruby Marie Tull born November 3, 1928 in Wetipquin and Ernest Tull. His second marriage was to Mary Alice Joseph. Her parents were Andrew Joseph and Mary Molley Jones Joseph of Wetipquin. They had one son Linwood Tull born circa 1943 and passed away September 1978 in Nanticoke, Maryland. He was buried in Odd Fellows cemetery in Wetipquin. Linwood Tull had one son; Linwood H Tull Jr. Linwood’s wife was Shirley Bivens. Jacob Tull had one stepdaughter, Violet Joseph of Wetipquin. Jacob Robert Tull passed way December 1977 in Salisbury and was buried in Odd Fellows cemetery in Wetipquin.
George Albert Tull Jr. was born circa 1904 in Wetipquin. In 1931 he married Gertrude Powell. She was born circa 1906 in Salisbury. George Albert Tull passed away December 1983 in Salisbury, Maryland and was buried in Green Acres cemetery in Salisbury. Margaret Jones was born circa 1873 in Wetipquin. She passed away July 12, 1925 and was buried in the Odd Fellows cemetery in Wetipquin, Maryland. John H. Jones was born October 1876 in Wetipquin. He married Catherine (Carrie) Goslee March 16, 1899 in Wetipquin. She was born circa 1881. Her parents were John Goslee and Henrietta Wilson Goslee.
The children of this marriage were John Emerson Jones, Orenzie Jones, Ernest Jones, Henrietta Jones, Nettie H Jones, Mary Jones and Robert Jones. John H. Jones passed away October 1959 and was buried in Odd Fellowship cemetery. John Emerson Jones was born circa 1900 in Wetipquin. His wife name was Helen Jones. John Emerson Jones passed June 1963 in Baltimore, Maryland and was buried in Odd Fellows cemetery in Wetipquin. Orenzie Orlando Jones was born circa 1903 in Wetipquin.
In 1931, he married Amelia Annie Bailey. She was born circa 1907 in Wetipquin. Her parents were Charles Bailey and Ethel Dashiell Bailey of Wetipquin. Orenzie and his wife Amelia were active members of Friendship Church serving in many different capacities. Orenzie passed away October 12, 1978 in Salisbury, Maryland. The daughter is Frances Jones who resides in Baltimore, Maryland. They also were foster parents rearing several group of families: Walter Green, Earl Green Marco Green, Paul Green and Delores Green. The second group was Darlene Burkes, Dorothy Burkes and Edward Burkes. The third group was Betty James and Betsy James.
James Ernest Jones was born circa 1907 in Wetipquin. His wife was Esther Jones. The children of this marriage were Jeannette Jones and James Jones. Ernest Jones passed away February 1969 in Philadelphia, PA and was buried in Mt Zion Church cemetery in Philadelphia. Henrietta Jones and Nettie H Jones were twins born circa 1910 in Wetipquin. Henrietta’s husband surname was Weaver. Her sister Nettie married Albert Cartwright. He was born circa 1898 in Norfolk, Virginia. The were married April 16, 1930 in Wetipquin. His friends called him “Shortie.” Albert Cartwright passed January 1960 in Norfolk, Virginia and was buried in the Cartwright family cemetery in Norfolk. Mary Frances Jones was born circa 1917 in Wetipquin. January 20, 1938 she married Granville Jones of Williamsburg, Maryland. He was born circa 1913 in Dorchester County, Maryland. Granville was a minister, preached and pastured all over several states on the east coast. Granville passed away March 6, 1990. His parents were Noah Jones and Hattie McGlotten Jones of Dorchester County Maryland. Their Daughter was Shirley Mae Jones. John and Carrie Jones youngest son was Robert Jones. Robert Jones had a daughter – Carrie Jones. Robert Jones is buried in Friendship Church Cemetery in Wetipquin. Rebecca Jones was born circa 1877 in Wetipquin. Georgia Jones was born August 1880 in Wetipquin.
Angeline Jones was born May 11, 1837 in Wetipquin. Her daughters were Hester Jones and Mary Margaret Jones. Hester Jones was born January 22, 1857 in Wetipquin. She died March 1, 1924 and was buried in Odd Fellows cemetery in Wetipquin. Hester Jones married John Lee Dutton in 1880. John Lee Dutton was born March 1853 in Somerset County, Maryland. He passed away circa 1925. The children of this marriage were Lilly B Dutton, Roger Dutton, George E Dutton, Charles Fletcher Dutton, Rufus Dutton, Olivia L Dutton, Pearl Dutton, John Dutton and Angeline Dutton who were twins.
Margaret Ann Jones was born February 23, 1838 in Wetipquin. Her husband was Levi Robinson. He was born circa 1833 in Somerset County, Maryland. He became a slave of William Catlin in September of 1849 at the age of 16. Levi Robinson received a deed of manumission and release from Catlin when he enlisted in the Volunteer Army of United States Colored Troops of the Civil War. He enlisted in the Ninth Regiment Company K on October 22, 1863 serving under Colonel William Birney who was the Superintendent of recruiting colored troops in the state of Maryland at White Haven. He was discharged November 26, 1866, serving three years, one month and four days. The children of Levi Robinson and Margaret Jones Robinson were Edward J Robinson was born August 20, 1859; Sarah I Robinson was born January 10, 1862; Charles H Robinson, James A Robinson, Mary A Robinson, John Hayes Robinson and Cora Lee Robinson. In the 1990 census records of the pensions for the USC Troops, Margaret Robinson was receiving a pension on the behalf of her husband- Levi Robinson. Her pension records can be found at the National Archives located in Washington, DC. She died from the results of a bush-fire before 1900.
Matilda Jones was born December 10, 1841 in Wetipquin. The children of this family were Henrietta Jones, Charles Jones, Sarah Jones, Samuel Jones and Minnie Jones. Henrietta Jones was born January 10, 1863 in Wetipquin. Her first marriage was to Louis Vanderbilt of Pennsylvania. Her friends and relatives called her “Aunt Hennie Biddle”. Her only son, James H. Vanderbilt, was born June 19, 1890. He passed away before 1900 and was buried in Friendship Church cemetery. Henrietta Jones second marriage was to John Conway. Charles Jones was born circa 1865. Sarah Jones was born circa 1871. Samuel Jones was born circa 1874. Minnie Jones was born circa 1879. Year’s later, Minnie Jones married a man whose surname was ONeill, they lived in Florida. In her will she left property to George Seldon, Jr. and money to other living relatives. The property was once owned by her sister, Henrietta and her husband John Conway who was deceased at the time.
Esther Jones was born March 20, 1844 in Wetipquin, Maryland. There is no further information concerning her. William T Jones was born December 2, 1846 in Wetipquin. He passed away March 31, 1922 in Wetipquin and was buried in Odd Fellows cemetery. Written on the death certificate of William Jones of Wetipquin stated that his father was Phillip Jones and his mother was Mary Bounds Jones. His wife was Mary Catherine Stanley Jones, formerly of Sharptown, Maryland. She was born March 1853. Written In the 1900 census it stated that she had ten children, eight of them living. The children of this marriage were Rachel E Jones, Adaline B Jones, William Thomas Jones, Lovenia Jones, Ina Jones, Rebecca Jones, Media Jones, and Charles T Jones.
Rachel Jones was born circa 1877 in Wetipquin. Her husband was George Scott. He died June 1952 in Camden New Jersey and was buried in Odd Fellows cemetery in Wetipquin. Adaline Jones was born circa 1879 in Wetipquin. Ina E Jones was born circa 1880 in Wetipquin. She married George Edward Seldon April 28, 1897 in Wetipquin. He was born circa 1875 in Wetipquin. His parents were George Seldon, a Civil War Soldier from Hampton, Virginia and Matilda Hull Seldon. The children of this marriage were Mary Vertie Seldon, William Handy (Bud) Seldon, Charles Wesley Seldon, Shelton Brooks Seldon, George Edward Seldon, Jr., Edna Seldon and Franklin Seldon. George Edward Seldon, Sr. passed away in 1954. Ina Jones Seldon passed away December 1949. They were buried in the Odd Fellows cemetery in Wetipquin.
William Thomas Jones was born January 1883 in Wetipquin. November 27, 1907 he married Mary Virginia Critchet. She was born March 1888 in White Haven, Maryland. One son was born circa 1910 of this union. His name was William Thomas Jones Jr. Her parents were Joseph Critchet and Sarah Handy Critchet of White Haven, Maryland. William Thomas Jones second marriage was to Martina Styles of Dorchester County, Maryland. They reared the following children: Russell Jones, Leonard Jones, Robert Jones and Helena Jones.
Lovenia Jones was born February 1884 in Wetipquin. Her husband was Romie B. Shaw. Rebecca Jones was born November 1890 in Wetipquin. Her husband was James Asbury Lankford. He was born circa 1888 in Wetipquin. His parents were Levin Thomas Lankford and Mary Eliza Seldon Lankford. Rebecca and her husband spent their early days of their marriage in Baltimore with his mother and traveled throughout the east coast with Dr. Fields, a local physician practicing medicine in this area. Rebecca was a midwife who worked with Dr. Fields. They returned back home to Wetipquin and purchased back his grandmother (Mary Ann Wright’s) property in 1917 from Watson D. Mitchell, a landowner in Wetipquin. The children of this marriage were Reba Lankford and Carrie Lankford. Reba Lankford married Raymond Burrell formerly of St Mary’s County, Maryland. Their children were Warren Burrell, Mason Burrell and Mildred (Ping) Burrell. Carrie Lankford first marriage was to Joseph Prater; her second marriage to Leonard Eugene Cuff of Salisbury, Maryland was May 31, 1951 in Wetipquin. Rebecca Jones Lankford passed away February 14, 1949 and James Asbury Lankford passed June 1965. They were buried in Odd Fellows cemetery in Wetipquin.
Media Ellen Jones was born February 1893 in Wetipquin. She married Samuel Henry Moore December 1905 in Wetipquin. He was born September 1888. His parents were Samuel Henry Moore and Minnie Dale Walton Moore. The children of this marriage were Harlan Moore, Maurice Moore, Gladys Moore, Leon Moore, Minnie Moore and Grace Moore. Samuel Harlan Moore was born circa 1909 in Wetipquin. He Married Eunice Dixon April 28, 1928. His second marriage was to Madeline Winder June 26, 1942 in Quantico, Maryland. She was born December 15, 1919. Her father was Monroe Winder and Lillie Jackson Winder of Quantico. Their children were Rudolph Moore and Carlos Moore. Samuel Harlan Moore passed away May 31, 1984 in Salisbury, Maryland and his wife Madeline Winder Moore passed away September 5, 1993. They were buried in Green Acres cemetery in Salisbury, Maryland.
Maurice (Little Buddy) Moore was born September 12, 1910 in Wetipquin. He married Amy Areletha Welch January 17, 1947 in Wetipquin. He has one son, Allen Wright. Allen’s mother was Dorine Wright of Wetipquin. His second marriage was to Myrtle Moore of White Haven, Maryland. Maurice Moore passed away June 13, 1991. Gladys Moore was born circa 1913 in Wetipquin. She moved to Pennsylvania at an early age. The family members stayed with her whenever they visited in Philadelphia. Leon C Moore was born circa 1916 in Wetipquin. He was a World War II Veteran. His son was Charles L. Moore of California. Leon Moore Passed away March 1970 and was buried in Odd Fellows cemetery in Wetipquin.
Minnie Ella Moore was born January 11, 1924 in Wetipquin. She married William Ernest Howell January 7, 1945 in Wetipquin. He was originally from Jacksonville, Florida. Her second marriage was to Major Spicer of Florida. She had two children Jerome (Doll Baby) ONeill Moore and Carmelia (Dump) Moore. Minnie Ella Moore Spicer passes away December 29, 2002 and was buried Manatee, Florida. Grace Coulborne Moore, an adopted daughter, was born circa 1930 in Rockawalkin, Maryland. She married Wilson (Mouse) Elwood Jones of Nanticoke, Maryland. He was born November 20, 1926. His Mother was Tina Jones. Their children are Stephanie Jones, Lavida Jones, Shirley Jones, Robins Jones, Anthony (Peanut) Jones and Gregory Jones. Grace Jones passed away June 21, 1985 in Pennsylvania and was buried in Green Acres cemetery in Salisbury, Maryland. Wilson Elwood Jones passed June 26, 2004.
Media Ellen Jones Moore passed away May 1974 and Her Husband Samuel Henry Moore passed away. They were buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Wetipquin. Charles Jones was born December 1894 in Wetipquin. He married Cora Wright of Fruitland, Maryland. Lucy Wright, daughter of William Jones was born August 1885 in Wetipquin. She married Thomas Henry Joseph January 16, 1902. He was born April 1882 in Wetipquin. Her mother was Sally Wright. His parents were Alexander Joseph and Eleanor Hull Joseph. The children of this marriage were Robert Joseph, Lola Joseph, Maurice (Resie) Joseph, Floyd Joseph, Ennis Joseph, Alexander Joseph and Eleanor Joseph. Lucy Wright Joseph passed away November 1966 and Thomas Henry Joseph passed away November 1955. They were buried in Odd Fellows cemetery in Wetipquin.
Mary Jones was born April 22, 1849 in Wetipquin, Maryland. Her daughter was Mary Margaret Jones. She was born June 26, 1868 in Wetipquin. Her family fondly called her “Maggie”. She grew up at “Sandy Hill Landing” steamship wharf located on the Nanticoke River in Wetipquin and worked in the hotel/café- serving guest who came on the steamships. The steamship era in Wetipquin began September 7, 1882. Her first marriage was to Francis Camper of Dorchester County, Maryland. In 1900 she was a widow living in the Dublin District of Somerset County; she had four children, three of them living.
On February 8, 1910 Maggie Jones Camper was joined in holy matrimony to Samuel Brewton Lankford who was a widower. This marriage took place in Wetipquin. His parents were Arnold Freeborn Lankford and Mary Ann Wright Lankford of Wetipquin. The following children were members of this household: stepdaughters Ethel and Julia Lankford. Twin sons born of this marriage: Michael Linwood Lankford and John Henry Lankford. The twins lived to be almost two years of age. Linwood passed away February 9, 1912 and John passed away February 17, 1912. The names of her children by the previous marriage were John Camper, Marcellus Camper, Lydia Camper, Minnie Camper, William David Camper and Raymond Camper.
